Turner topples Crisp twice in non-region play

Ashburn — Crisp County High’s mid-season basketball slump continued Saturday when both its girls and boys squads went down in defeat at the hands of neighboring Turner County.

Coach Barrett Wilkes’ Lady Cougars dropped a 46-35 decision to a Lady Rebels squad they had beaten 39-32 at home in mid-December. Coach Terry Smith’s Cougars fell 78-62 to a foe that had previously nipped them by just one, 68-67.

Those outcomes left the visiting girls with a record of 8-5 and the boys with a report card of 5-10. Both will be at home on Friday for re-matches with Worth County.

Lady Rebels 46, Lady Cougars 35

In suffering back-to-back losses for the first time this season, Crisp struggled in all three phases of the game. The result was rest break deficits of 13-9, 25-18 and 34-25 and a 12-10 deficit in the final canto.

“We had no offensive execution; our defensive rotations were a little slow, and we got outrebounded by far,” Wilkes said. “We didn’t have any continuity at all. The girls understand that’s something that has to get better if we’re going to turn things around.”

Dee Dee Williams and Nasheema Oliver  each sank 11 points to share scoring honors for the Lady Cougars who, Wilkes said, did play a tad better than they had in their 44-32 loss Friday to Americus-Sumter.

In avenging its previous setback at Crisp’s hands, Turner got double-digit scoring from Zenia Coley, 17, Antania Graddic, 15, and Maylashia Yancey, 10.

Rebels 78, Cougars 62

The double-digit numbers Crisp posted in turnovers and missed free throws combined with Turner’s double-digit advantage in attempted charity shots figured prominently in the Cougars’ fourth loss in their last six starts.

“Commit 23 turnovers, miss 11 (of 21) free throw attempts and send your opponent to the line 13 more times than you go and it’d be hard to beat any team much less one as good as Turner’s,” Smith said.

Despite its shortcomings, Crisp held a 16-14 first-period lead and managed a 28-28 tie at intermission before getting outscored 20-10 in the third stanza and 30-24 in the final quarter.

“They pressed us from the start but it wasn’t until the second half that they hurt us with it,” Smith said. “We also hung with them on the boards until Shaquille (West) dislocated his thumb in the third quarter and sat out the rest of the game. Landon Whitman did come off the bench to get couple of nice rebounds and baskets.”

David Harvey netted 13 points and Javoris Cooks cashed in 10 for the Cougars. The Rebels also had a pair of twin-column pointmakers in Devontae Curtis, 22, and Antonia Graddic, 14.
