Columbus —
Prior to coming here Saturday night for a Region 4-A twin bill, Dooly County High had heard just how good Brookstone’s boys were. It was the Brookstone girls, though, who shined best against the guests.
In assuring right off the bat that their school would get a split of the evening’s varsity action, the Lady Cougars hammered the Lady Bobcats 65-25 after the Bobcats had nailed the Cougars 53-49.
Both Dooly teams have a pair of outings on tap this weekend, hosting Brookstone on Friday before going to Macon County on Saturday.
Bobcats 53, Cougars 49
When the home team jumped out to a 15-7 first period lead, there was at least some reason to believe its reputation as a Class A power might be warranted. Before the evening was over, though, the Cougars looked anything but unbeatable.
In improving their record to 6-3 overall, 3-1 in league play, the Bobcats forged ahead 24-21 at halftime and owned a 38-33 advantage entering the backstretch where they only got outscored by a point.
“We came here expecting to see a super team led by a player (Duncan Fletcher) nicknamed Superman,” Dooly scorekeeper Sharal Young said.
“Either he and his teammates had a bad night or our guys had some kryptonite (Superman’s nemesis) as on this particular night they weren’t as good as we had heard they were.”
The one true individual standout in the game was Bobcat A.J. Smith who poured in a season-high 31 points and keyed Dooly’s domination of the backboards.
In finishing with 14 points for the losers, Fletcher placed second in scoring to teammate Jonathan Gordon who had 15. Drew Lingo canned another 12 in defeat.

Brookstone 65, Dooly 25 (girls)
Showing no resemblance to the Dooly team that had thumped Pacelli 55-26 the night before, the Lady Bobcats were never in contention in this one. Consequently, they found themselves trailing 15-2, 38-8 and 57-21 at the rest breaks.
“We showed up in name only as it was pretty much all Brookstone from the very start,” said Young. “Our shots wouldn’t fall; we had a multitude of turnovers, and we got beat badly on the boards.”
Shy’Lexia Hall pitched in 14 points to singlehandedly account for more than half of Dooly’s points. The Lady Cougars got 15 points from both Neshia Thomas and Noeshia McClain, 12 from Rachel Moie and 10 from Santreece Stephens.
