Cordele —
Crisp Academy fall sports participants received recognition Tuesday night at a special awards ceremony held at the First United Methodist Church activities center.
First-year head football Ron Drummonds and assistants Don Odom and Michael Miller handed out several awards in that sport to players who helped the Wildcats post a 7-3 record and earn a state playoff berth.
Best linemen awards went to James Wessel on offense and Thomas Hall on defense. Best back honors went to Jeff McKinney on offense and Hunter Chambers on defense.
Brad Richmond was the recipient of the Coach Mike Roobin Award named in honor of a late Wildcats mentor who led the school to two state championships.
Matt Wright was chosen best linebacker/defensive end. Chris McGee was named most improved. Will Krause was chosen as best receiver. Chip Posey received the Gene Harpe “Hog of the Year” award named in honor of a late Wildcats line coach. Posey also was presented his jersey from the GISA all-star football game.
Banks Folsom, Chambers and Posey were recognized as all-state and all-region selections and Jake Smith and McKinney as all-region choices.
Varsity softball players received certificates of participation from head coach Jodie Hays and assistant Lilli Luke.
Proclaimed by Hays as “probably the best catcher in the state,” Mandie Foster was named best offensive player based upon her team-leading batting average and stolen base totals.
First baseman Maddie Krause was tabbed most improved player, having committed only five errors and displaying what Hays labeled “best attitude.”
Jay Jay Yawn was tabbed best defensive player and Kayla Childers was the recipient of the coaches award. Yawn, Brown and Foster were also singled out as being all-state and all-region selections while Childers and Krause were all-region choices.
In cross-country where the Crisp Academy girls placed second in Region 3-A, Parker Krause and Kara White were singled out as all-region selections along with Grace and Maggie Atherton and Foster.
Headmaster Dr. Kip Stevens gave the evening’s invocation and led the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.
Drummonds made the welcoming remarks to the athletes, parents and guests in attendance.
