Americus —
Crisp County High’s girls suffered their first loss of the season while its boys came close to notching their first win of the season in Tuesday tennis competition vs. Americus-Sumter.
Both the Lady Cougars and Cougars of coach Junior Peeples were dealt 3-2 losses that left the girls with a 2-1 record and the boys with a 1-2 mark going into Wednesday home matches vs. Cairo.
Scheduled competition against Dougherty has been postponed due to the Lady Trojans’ continued participation in state basketball tournament play.

Aware beforehand they would be going up against a Region 1-AAAA opponent that has been their most competitive in recent years, the Lady Cougars knew the outcome would be close.
“The final score was about what we had expected although we were hoping to be the team that came out of the match with the three wins,” Peeples said.
“The opportunity to have done so was there as we had a 3-2 lead in the second set of No. 1 doubles only to lose it 6-3 and drop the third set and the overall match.
“Their picking up No. 1 singles player, Bi Qi, on a transfer from Schley County only made them better as she by far is the best girls player in the region. Her presence enabled them to slide everybody else on their playing ladder down a notch.
“As I told our young ladies afterwards, though, we have to play them again and before we do our goal is to continue to get better, beat them when they come to our place and thus set up a tiebreaker match for the region title.”
On an individual basis, Peeples said the No. 2 doubles team of freshmen Jordan Farmer and Laura Bertelson “played very well” as did Ashley Denby at No. 3 singles “especially in her second set.”
Singles — Bi Qi (A-S) def. Julia Davis 6-1, 6-0; Lauren Resnick (A-S) def. Katey Miller 6-1, 6-2, and Ashley Denby (C) def. Camille Bennett 6-4, 6-1.
Doubles — Ciara James and Jennifer Pinnell (A-S) def. Catherine Mayo and Danielle Walls 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 and Jordan Farmer and Laura Bertelson (C) def. Sara Westra and Brooke Benton 6-3, 6-2.
A-SHS 3, Crisp 2 (boys)
While he expressed disappointment at the Cougars’ failure to prevail in their match, Peeples was pleased on the other hand to see them turn in their best overall performance of the young season to date.
“As a coach, I always want to win, but at the same time it was good to see us perform a little better than we had been playing.
“Jonathan Baker continued to play solid (at No. 2 singles), bouncing back from a first set loss to win the second set and then take his third set in a tiebreaker. I appreciate that determination.
“I also thought both our doubles teams did reasonably well considering the four guys we’re using there had no varsity experience at all before this season.
“Overall, I continue to challenge every member of the squad to keep working to improve the skill part of their game as well as the mental part.”
Singles — Joel Landis (A-S) def. Derrick Bessix 6-0, 6-0; Jonathan Baker (C) def. Heeral McGhee 3-6, 7-5, 11-9, and Bryan Stewart (C) def. Charles Kinnimon 6-2, 6-0.
Doubles — Jason Parks and Andre Medina (A-S) def. Brandon Dominey and Zack West 6-2, 6-3 and Khelan McGhee and Logan Bennett (A-S) def. Jonathan Walls and Shelby Arnett 6-2, 6-2.
