Crisp County High fields 7 of 8 area grid scholarship signees

Cordele — Crisp County High had its biggest National Signing Day observation ever while Wilcox County had one signee and Dooly County none in that respect on Wednesday.

Led by University of Miami commit Jontavious Carter who starred as a wide receiver, no less than seven members of the Cougars signed scholarships the first day they could officially do so. Two more have been offered but are mulling other options.

“We’re as proud as we can be to have this many kids get the opportunity to play college football after finishing up their careers with us,” first-year Crisp head coach Lee Campbell said after the signing day ceremonies.

“Their athleticism and hard work on the field and in the classroom paid off for these young men and that makes this a good day for the Cougars football program.

“Many long hours of practice during which they suffered bumps and bruises and games in which they experienced the joys and sorrows the sport of football offers preceded this moment that’s exciting for all of us.

“Not only is this the most kids our school has ever had sign in the same season, it’s also the most I’ve ever had receive scholarships at one time (he did have five from my 2004 Hawkinsville High team that won state).”

Campbell also acknowledged the effort his coaching staff members put in long hours preparing game film to submit to various colleges obviously paid dividends.

“I and my assistant coaches also appreciate the administration, the Touchdown Club and last, but not least, the parents whose combined efforts helped these players get to where we are today.”

In addition to Carter, other Cougars accepting scholarship offers made to them were Tracie Walker, Devaughan Smith and Mike Paul, who are all headed to Fort Valley State; Marshall Taylor, who’s going to Miami, Ohio; Devionte Lewis, Coffeeville, Kans., Junior College, and Trevor Shealy, Point University, a new four-year school in East Point, Ga.

Wilcox’s lone signee was wide receiver Quez Mahoganey who’s headed to the University of West Georgia in Carrollton.

The younger brother of Nick Marshall who was the only Patriot to receive a scholarship on the 2011 signing day when he officially went with the University of Georgia, Mahoganey had career totals of 27 touchdown receptions and 1,800-plus yards.

“We’re extremely pleased that Quez is going to be able to stay in state where we can all follow his career closely as he goes to a great school and a program that’s on the rise,” Wilcox head coach Mark Ledford said.

“I think they’re getting a guy who has the potential to be an impact player. Hopefully within the next few weeks, we’ll have another 2-3 guys who’ll be joining him as a scholarship recipient somewhere.”

Meanwhile, Dooly County High head coach Jimmy Hughes said no Bobcat signed a scholarship yesterday but noted he anticipates having one player he declined to identify do so early next week.
