The 2012 portions of their current basketball schedule behind them, Crisp area basketball teams will launch the 2013 parts of their slate in the busy weekend awaiting them.
Friday’s card finds Crisp County High’s Cougars (3-8) and Lady Cougars (6-3) entertaining Cairo at 6 p.m., Dooly County’s Bobcats (2-2) and Lady Bobcats (1-3) visiting Greenville at 6 p.m., Fullington’s Trojans (3-4) and Lady Trojans (2-5) traveling to Tiftarea at 6:30 and Wilcox High’s Patriots (8-1) and Lady Patriots (2-4) entertaining Coffee County at 6.
On Saturday, Fullington Academy hosts Grace Christian of Bainbridge at 2 p.m., Crisp Academy’s Lady Wildcats (12-2) and Wildcats (3-6) welcome Mt. de Sales in a twin bill tipping off at 4:30 p.m. and Wilcox entertains Turner County at 6 p.m.
Crisp County also makes a short trek to Dooly County for a 7 p.m. doubleheader that will mark the only pairing of the season between the archrivals due to the Bobcats’ late end to the football season where they emerged as the GHSA Class A state runner-up to ECI.
Admission to the clashes between the Bobcat and Cougar cagers will be $10 per person with the gate to be equally split between the two schools. The two arch-rivals will also tangle in a 10 a.m. middle school match-up in Pinehurst and a 4 p.m. jayvee twin bill in Vienna.
Crisp County’s boys will be coming off a 1-3 performance in the Converse Invitational in Decatur, beating Alcovy 57-54 in their opener before losing to Columbia County (74-55) and Bartow, Fla., (69-44).
The Crisp girls lone yule tournament outing resulted in a 67-45 loss to Valdosta in the Tift County High Invitational.
In their Christmas holiday play, Dooly’s Bobcats won the Wilkinson County Invitational by beating the host school and Wheeler County. The Lady Bobcats placed third there, rebounding from a 69-37 loss to Wilkinson by beating Wheeler 59-49.
Wilcox High’s Patriots notched a third place finish in the Turner County Invitational, sandwiching wins of 71-53 over Americus-Sumter and 61-58 over Lowndes High in between a 72-67 loss to Coffee County.
Crisp Academy’s Lady Wildcats won both their starts in the round-robin tournament they hosted, beating Southland 45-19 in their first start and edging Mt. de Sales 41-36 in double overtime in their second outing.
The Wildcats went 1-1 in that affair, downing Southland 52-36 before bowing to Mt. de Sales 57-48 when they were unable to preserve the 10-point lead they held to start the final period of play.
Wilcox’s Lady Patriots and Fullington Academy’s Trojans and Lady Trojans did not take part in any holiday tourney play.

GHSA state baseball champions acknowledged
The Marist team that eliminated Crisp County High from the GHSA Class AAAA state playoffs in the semifinals round wound up getting beat in the finals by a fellow Region 6-AAAA member — Redan High.
