Bobcats repeat sweep of fellow Region 4-A member Hawkinsville

Hawkinsville — While victory came slightly easier for Dooly County’s boys in a Saturday re-match with Hawkinsville, triumph proved more difficult for its girls to achieve in a second go-’round with their foe.

A 12-point, 61-49 winner over the Red Devils just four nights earlier in Vienna, coach Towandi King’s Bobcats prevailed by 15, 73-58, here. A 32-point conqueror of the Lady Red Devils at home, coach David Barron’s Lady Bobcats beat them by just 17, 50-33, on the road.

The Dooly teams have a pair of outings on tap this weekend, hosting Greenville on Friday and visiting Wilcox County on Saturday.

Bobcats 73, Red Devils 58

Keeping their running game in high gear all night, the Bobcats accelerated to an eight-point 17-9 first period lead that the Red Devils managed to trim to six, 31-25, by intermission.

Dooly, which in extending its win streak to 10 games improved to 12-3 overall, 8-1 in Region 4-A play, won the third quarter scoring battle 15-13 to restore its lead to eight, 46-38, heading into the final turn. There, it outscored the home team 27-20 to win going away.

“With LaParris (Hall) and A.J. (Smith) controlling the boards and triggering the fast break, our running game worked well all night,” said Dooly scorekeeper Sharal Young in reporting game results.

That pair also emerged as the Bobcats’ top scorers with Smith swishing the cords for 27 and Hall rippling them for 15. Rashon Griggs and Warren Singletary sank 12 each for the Hawkinsville team coached by former Crisp County Middle School boys coach Stacy Stephens.

Committing downright “thievery” in repeatedly picking the pockets of ballhandlers for the Lady Red Devils, the now 4-11, 3-6 Lady Bobcats converted most of their steals into easy baskets.

By doing so, they held rest break advantages of 12-6, 25-14 and 39-21 and limited the majority of Hawkinsville’s scoring to the final two minutes of each period when Dooly reserves were in the game.

“Tridedra both shot and rebounded well,” said Young in brief commentary about the game that ended with Burke having bagged 24 points and Quanesha Tookes having tossed in 11 for the victors. Olivia Daniells and Tyneshia Edwards each sank eight in defeat.
