Fullington cagers fall victim to Tiftarea twice

Chula — Just about anything that could go wrong did go wrong for Fullington Academy’s basketball teams during Friday night competition with Tiftarea Academy.

The result was a pair of double-digit losses in their first outings of 2013 as the now 3-5 Trojans fell 45-33 and the now 2-6 Lady Trojans suffered an even worse 43-18 whipping.

The one consolation was that no region honors were at stake since Fullington is in Class A and Tiftarea in AAA.

Panthers 45, Trojans 33

Held to single-digit in each of the first two periods, the Trojans almost instantly found themselves in a deep hole from which they could never escape. It was 20-6 after a quarter and 26-9 at halftime.

Coach Van Bailey’s visitors did play somewhat better after intermission when their 13-2 advantage in the final stanza allowed them win the second-half scoring battle 24-19 and make their final deficit a little more respectable. Still, their final points production represented a season low.

“If our shooting ever comes around, I think we’ll be alright,” a dejected Bailey said after noting that his team sank just 15 percent of its 63 field goal attempts and went just 1 of 11 from the free throw line.

“Defensively, though, I thought we did pretty good, especially in the second and fourth quarters after we had switched from zone to man-for-man once they hit three treys to open the game.”

Each team wound up with a lone double-digit scorer. For Fullington, it was David Roney with 10 points. For Tiftarea, Taylor Folsom’s 11 points led the way.

Tiftarea 43, Fullington 18

As poorly as the Trojans shot from the field, the Lady Trojans fared even worse. In being held under 20 points for a third time thus far this season, they rang the basket just five times. They did go 8 of 10 from the line.

“We definitely had a rough shooting night,” coach Mike Cason observed in lamenting his team’s inaccuracy. “That wasn’t our only problem area, though, as we had 25-plus turnovers and also lost the battle of the boards by a big margin to a Tiftarea team that has good size.”

Just as Bailey felt his boys team had two good quarters defensively so did Cason about his girls squad, pointing out the Lady Trojans held their host to single-digit scoring in the second and fourth periods.

The Lady Panthers’ Jarrett McWhorter emerged as the only player on either team to reach the twin-column ranks individually. Her 11 points helped Tiftarea take rest break advantages of 12-4, 18-8 and 34-12. Darrian Bailey’s eight points topped Fullington’s scoring ledger.
