Editor:
The Cordele Dispatch, editorial board and Peggy King are/should be congratulated for their article, “Battle of Wills in Wilcox County” dated March 18, 2010.
This article exemplifies the dysfunctional decisions made/being made by the Wilcox County Commissioners relative to their spending habits.
In all the recommendations/suggestions put forth by the group of concerned citizens, relative to their discrepancies, have you heard any logical defense from the Board for their inappropriate actions?
The answer is no, as there is no defense for their incompetent extremely wasteful spending. There is no effort to try and reduce the Wilcox County debt. They just keep on spending and let the taxpayers pick up the bill.
Oh yes, I heard about the letter to all department heads requesting they reduce their budget by 15%. Wow, now does that mean 30% total as my arithmetic says the commissioners are already almost 6 months into the fiscal year?
Is this too little too late? Makes me wonder, had the concerned citizens not organized, would we ever have heard of any such action by this commission. This, I predict, will turn into an interesting venture and nothing will happen.
As stated in the article, no suggestions have been adhered to thus far. Instead of listening, they bury their heads in the sand as if they are held hostage by some of the department heads rather than stepping up to the plate and explaining the amount of monies available.
To preclude borrowing money, it is time to reduce spending rather than continuing to borrow. This, to me, is much better than throwing money at the problem.
In closing, I trust that the citizens of Wilcox County have had enough of the continual out of control spending and being treated as second class citizens and that some hard-working competent individuals will step up to the plate and challenge a majority of the present commission by qualifying to run against them.
Maybe, just maybe, we will be successful and they will be open to valid ideas and/or suggestions for the betterment of Wilcox County.

Mr. Man is peculiar
Men are peculiar creatures. I suppose, now that I’ve laid that provocative declaration on the table, you’ll want solid proof to back it up, though proving it will not be a difficult task; all I have to do is point to…Mr. Man.

Spartanburg, South Carolina, is not the cultural center of the universe. I am qualified to make that statement based on my experiences in Spartanburg which include The Hearon Traffic Circle, The Midnight Sun, and Wofford College.

Life, liberty, and .….springtime?
Spring is officially here. I don’t care about the calendar, the baseball season, the basketball playoffs, Easter, when the Confederate Jasmine blooms, when the robins come through, when the sand hill cranes fly, or what the temperature does.

Victim thanks officers
(A story about a robbery at gunpoint ran in Thursday’s Cordele Dispatch. As is the paper’s policy, the victim was not identified. He submitted a letter of thanks, but asked that he still not be identified.
We are honoring his request because of the circumstances. Sheriff Donnie Haralson and other officers know who he is). -
Life, liberty, and …vacations?
Vacations are a time to get away and escape the humdrum of your normal life. Some couples I know like to take a trip about once a quarter, just get out of town.
