Leesburg reader says Brock criticism unfair

Dear editor:

I have read the letter that Joel Owens wrote about the recreation department and Brockey Brock. Maybe the citizens need to know what kind of man they have at the recreation department from someone who knows him.

Brockey has been in recreation for over 30 years and seen people like Joel Owens come and go. Brockey supports true recreation, a concept that many people have overlooked.

Recreation is for everyone, not just the ones who are athletically blessed. Everyone gets to participate and learn and be part of a team; that's true recreation.

If you read Joel's letter and truly understand what he is talking about, then you know that all he wants is for these travel teams to have free run over a county-run facility. Ask Joel how much he charges each parent to pay for their child to be on his travel team? Ask him how many kids he has playing for him that do not even live in Crisp County? I think you would be surprised by his answers.

By Brockey and his staff not allowing everyone to have free reign on a nice new complex, that just means the complex will be there for many generations to enjoy instead of being run-down in a year or two. I see nothing wrong with charging a fee to practice on the fields when that team is not under the direction or guidance or has no affiliation with the recreation department.

Do you realize what it takes to maintain good playing fields? The gas for the mowers, drag machines, weed eaters, the water and fertilizer, and the hours it takes just to keep the place looking nice.

Mr. Owens, I think you need to look at everything Brockey has done. How about the after-school programs? The summer camps? Do you know what the recreation department offers outside of athletics? I seriously doubt it.

Look at Brockey's background from when he was in Albany. That place was the premier department in the state when he was at the top of it. And had it not been for some disgruntled employees in Valdosta, that department would be at the top of the list in the state by now.

I'd love to sit down man-to-man with you Joel and you tell me what this man has done to deserve this kind of public criticism and discuss your current recreation department with you. Brockey, when you get tired of putting up with this, Albany sure would love to have you back.

Sincerely,

Jon Harrell

  • Implausible chickrabs

You will not believe it! Shoot, I wouldn’t believe it myself had I not observed the sight with my own eyes.
Yesterday was hot. I mean really hot with the humidity high and the temperature within a couple of degrees of 100 even after 8 p.m. when I began my daily run through the woods and fields of the backside.

  • Share thoughts about war in Iraq

Now that combat troops have pulled out of Iraq, the Cordele Dispatch would like to hear how readers feel about the conflict. If you are from the Crisp,  Dooly, Wilcox area and you served any time in that country, would you share your experiences and tell us if you think the country will succeed as a democratic nation?

  • The most valuable gift

The  Jewish Temple had many gates. One of them was called “Beautiful.”
Here a  certain lame man sat each day because it was a well traveled area with people  entering and exiting the temple constantly. Perhaps a kind soul would show  mercy and drop a coin or two for him.

Fortunately, I no longer have children attending CCHS that have to deal with this problem. I however think there could have been a better way of handling the road construction without completely closing the road.
