Share your memories

Readers throughout the Cordele Dispatch coverage area are invited to share their Christmas memories, traditions and photos for the December issue of the Tri-County Scene, the community’s bi-monthly magazine.

An account of a favorite childhood or other memory would be great. For example, I can remember only one “white” Christmas in South Georgia during my entire lifetime. About three days before Christmas, a winter storm blew in, and deposited several inches of snow on the ground. It wasn’t enough to paralyze the area like the “big snow” of 1973, but it was enough to be beautiful.

I had an opportunity to ride around Dooly County the morning after the snow had fallen the previous night. Most yards were undisturbed, so the countryside looked like a picture postcard or one of those Christmas cards where snow blankets everything. It was breath-taking, unlike anything I had ever seen. Some remnants of the snow remained until Christmas day. I don’t remember the exact year, but it was in the early 1990’s.

Surely you must have stories of your own. Please share those with us and our readers.

We also would love to hear about your family traditions and receive some of your best holiday photos. Does your family go someplace special every Christmas or decorate a particular kind of tree? Do you eat certain foods and always associate those with the holiday? Everyone has traditions. Please take a few minutes to put yours into words and send it to peggy.king@gaflnews.com.

Submissions also are welcome at the front counter of our office or through the mail to P. O. Box 1058, Cordele 31010. Please direct mail to my attention.

I look forward to reading your stories and seeing your pictures. Please get your submissions to us no later than next Thursday, Nov. 19. Thanks so much for sharing.

  • Implausible chickrabs

You will not believe it! Shoot, I wouldn’t believe it myself had I not observed the sight with my own eyes.
Yesterday was hot. I mean really hot with the humidity high and the temperature within a couple of degrees of 100 even after 8 p.m. when I began my daily run through the woods and fields of the backside.

  • Share thoughts about war in Iraq

Now that combat troops have pulled out of Iraq, the Cordele Dispatch would like to hear how readers feel about the conflict. If you are from the Crisp,  Dooly, Wilcox area and you served any time in that country, would you share your experiences and tell us if you think the country will succeed as a democratic nation?

  • Legislating morality: everybody is doing it

Without fail, when conservatives take a position on a moral concern, liberals will angrily assert, “You can’t legislate morality!”

  • Taking my own advice

If you’re like me, you probably enjoy handing out advice, both solicited and unsolicited. After all, those of us who have vast life experiences owe it to those with less experience to share our wisdom.

  • The most valuable gift

The  Jewish Temple had many gates. One of them was called “Beautiful.”
Here a  certain lame man sat each day because it was a well traveled area with people  entering and exiting the temple constantly. Perhaps a kind soul would show  mercy and drop a coin or two for him.

  • Readers comment on 24th Ave.-Frontage Rd. traffic jam

Fortunately, I no longer have children attending CCHS that have to deal with this problem. I however think there could have been a better way of handling the road construction without completely closing the road.
