Vienna — Dear Editor
Mars Hill Baptist Church community has many memories as the church was established in 1894. This same location was also the home to Mars Hill School which educated a lot of our family members. The church was built facing Highway 27 the original dirt road before paving, when Highway 27 was paved the dirt roads name was changed to Adams Road. My family’s home, where I presently live, was built facing this road over a hundred years ago. There is a proposal to our Dooly County Commissioners to close this road for the advantage of a single farmer.
I felt it important that the citizens of Dooly County be aware of this for the following reasons:
It’s part of our history, it’s the only part of the original Highway 27 left. Many families from this community have precious memories of their ancestors riding horse and buggy, walking down this road going to Mars Hill Church or School, or even traveling this route to Hawkinsville, and Mock Springs. Even if you don’t have memories on this road there is no financial benefit to the county to close it. In fact, it opens the county up to possible safety liabilities if heavy equipment is not able to travel down the rural dirt road, and must travel on Highway 27 instead.
The family members living on this road DO NOT want it closed. It is completely in the hands of our Dooly County Commissioners voting, hopefully keeping ALL of our interest in mind. If you have any feelings for the history or the possible liabilities for our county please call your county commissioner and let him know how you feel. The vote is scheduled for August 19 at 9 AM in the commissioners office in Vienna. If you choose to do so the meeting is open to the public. If preferred, the phone number for the commissioners office is 268-4228 or you can call your commissioner direct.
Thank you,
Steve Southwell
