Eualvene "Bean" Fenn Powell, 86, went to be with the Lord Monday, Sept. 6, 2010 after suffering a stroke Aug. 24, 2010. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 11 in the chapel of Rainey Family Funeral Services.
The family will receive friends Friday, Sept. 10 from 7 until 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Mrs. Powell will be laid to rest next to her husband at Sunnyside Cemetery in Cordele. A memorial service is planned at First Baptist Atlanta on Saturday, Sept. 18.
Mrs. Powell was born in Hatley and was the daughter of the late John H. and Annie Whelchel Fenn. She grew up in Cordele and graduated from Cordele High School. While in high school she was a member of the marching band and was elected the May Day Queen in 1940.
She graduated from Macon Business School and worked in a government facility in Warner Robins during World War II.
Mrs. Powell married James "Pete" E. Powell, Sr. of Vienna in 1942. After Pete's return from serving with Gen. Patton's group in Europe during WW II, he and Eualvene settled in East Point where she was actively involved in numerous church activities.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Cordele, Colonial Hills Baptist Church in East Point and First Baptist Church Atlanta. She taught Bible classes and Sunday School for over 50 years. She organized and hosted the annual Pecan Trip from First Baptist Atlanta to Cordele each November for the past 12 years.
She is survived by a daughter and her husband, Laree and Gary Saylor; a son and his wife, James "Jimmy" E. Jr. and Risa Powell; one sister, Anne Fenn Kilgore; five grandchildren, C. Whitley Lilly and his wife, Lori, Kristina J. Lilly, James E. Powell, III, Michael R. Powell and his wife, Tatiana, and Debra Whitaker and her husband, Eric; five great-grandchildren, Lucas Bostwick, Mackenzie Lilly, Whitney Lilly, Maisie Whitaker and Amanda Whitaker; and a number of cousins, nieces, nephews, and special friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James E. Powell, Sr. in 1997 and her sister, Jane Fenn Foster in 1981.
