Cordele —
Crisp County Commissioners have set a public hearing for 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 21 on the second floor of the Government Building at the corner of 13th Ave. and 7th St.
The purpose of this hearing will be to listen to comments about a recent proposal presented by a citizens’ task force concerning the handling of household trash.
That proposal was presented to commissioners at their November meeting and included the following recommendations:
• That county dump sites be reduced to two – a landfill manned site, preferably in-ground and the farmers market site to be used strictly for yard clippings and vegetation.
• That county-wide curbside service be implemented with the goal of maintaining the monthly fee per customer at $18 or less. Currently county property owners are paying a portion of their ad valorem tax for trash pickup (approximately $240 annually). Under the committee’s plan, that tax would be rebated, and everyone, whether he owns or rents would pay for the curbside service.
• That county governors coordinate with Keep Crisp Beautiful, local law enforcement and county judges to enforce current laws and ordinances concerning secure loads, illegal dumping and littering. This should help eliminate the debris that blows out of vehicles along roadsides.
• That a litter awareness program be developed and implemented, designed with children in mind especially.
Every citizen in Crisp County is invited to attend this public meeting where they will obtain information and be given an opportunity to express their opinions.
