Cordele —
Members of the Cordele Fine Arts Club met Thursday, Nov. 15 at the home of Anne Harrell with Barbara Stripling and Donna Mallory serving as co-hostesses. Fourteen members enjoyed a dessert course.
Following routine business, club members were reminded of various Christmas programs in the area during the season: Dec. 9, First Baptist, Cordele; Dec. 16, First Baptist, Sylvester; Dec. 16, Penia Baptist, Cordele and Dec. 16, Cordele First United Methodist.
Annelle Carden directed the program, continuing the study of Henry Mancini from the book, “Did They Mention the MUSIC? The Autobiography of Henry Mancini.”
Mancini met many men during his career. Mrs. Carden said he was in the “right place at the right time.” As he learned the business side of music, his wife, Ginny introduced him to many men.
His parents moved to Hollywood to be closer to Henry and Ginny. His mother suffered eight heart attacks, and his father was difficult to deal with. Mrs. Carden said Mancini bought his father a trailer and hired him as his music librarian.
She added that Mancini’s father never understood why Henry didn’t allow his parents to live with him.
Mancini joined Universal Pictures music department in 1952 working as an arranger for the next 6 years. In 1958, he left Universal and scored the new detective series, “Peter Gunn” for film director, Blake Edwards.
The composer enjoyed a long collaboration with Edwards, Mrs. Carden reported, and won numerous academy awards for songs in Edwards’ films.
When Mancini visited Europe, he learned that he was as well known there as in the United States.
Club members performed some of Mancini’s music:
• “Charade,” sung by Debbie Rainer, accompanied by Carolyn Hunt.
• “Anywhere the Heart Goes,” played by Connie Ellis.
• Frank Sinatra’s “That’s Life,” sun by Peggy Haralson, accompanied by Eula Jo Sheffield.
• “Dreamsville” played by Mrs. Mallory.
• “Experiment in Terror” played by Carolyn Hunt.
• “Theme from Hatari,” a John Wayne film, played by Mrs. Mallory.
• “Thorn Birds,” played by Barbara Stripling, a TV movie based on Colleen McCullough’s 1977 novel by the same name.
In recognition of NFMC Parade of American Music Month, Sheryl McCoy introduced the club to several songs which club members sang with Mrs. Sheffield accompanying.
Selections included Mancini and Johnny Mercer’s “Moon River,” “Dream a Little Dream of Me,” and “Thanks for the Memory.”
Club members sang the October and November songs of the month accompanied by Ms. Stripling — “Tramp, Tramp, Tramp” and “For the Beauty of the Earth.”
