Kim Mensching says enough non-perishable food items were collected this year to fill 140 family boxes and have some left over to donate to various food pantries. All the schools in the county, along with Three's Company, served as collection points. Ms. Mensching said children at each of the schools were encouraged to donate with the promise that the class which donates the most items would be treated to a party.
The drive began in October and culminated this past Thursday when League members and other volunteers in the community including Boy Scouts met at the National Guard Armory on 8th Ave. to prepare the boxes. Department of Family & Children Services (DFCS) personnel, under the direction of Linda Rollins, were scheduled to distribute the food boxes Friday from the Armory.
Besides the non-perishables, families who are served by DFCS each will receive a hen as a gift from the Community League, a local organization of about 50 members.
Prior to Thursday, Ms. Mensching said students at the middle and high schools did a lot of sorting and getting the canned goods ready for the boxes. Adults assisting them were Lyn Stanford and Debbie Keeney.
Suncrest Stone and Murray Printing Company donated boxes, Ms. Mensching said. Murray also provided some printing services. The National Guard Armory allowed the group to use their facility at no charge.
Pantries that will receive some of the items include Christ Episcopal Church, Fishes & Loaves, First United Methodist Church, Houston Baptist Association and Back Pack Buddies.
