American Legion honors WWII veterans

Rochelle — Wilcox County American Legion Post No. 71paid special tribute to its World War II veterans at its annual family Christmas supper recently.

Among the Legion’s ranks are 14 members of that “great generation,” but only five were able to attend the event. The 14 include Newt Hudson, Ernest Braziel Jr., James Lee, Robert Braziel, John King, George Crenshaw, John Warren, Tharpe Rhodes, Cecil Patterson, Homer Conner, Tony Sheppard, Thomas Ritter, Dodson Lamb and Ted Abbott.

According to Post Commander Bill Sutton, “there is something about these men that we should learn. They do not know the word ‘quit’ or ‘we can’t’. Such words are not in their dictionary.”

Carlton Fisher expressed thanks to each of the men, and certificates of honor were presented to the five that could attend.

On the certificates were printed the words, “In recognition and grateful appreciation for serving in the United States Armed Forces during World War II, in the name of freedom and democracy and for allegiance to God and country in courageously protecting our liberty and independence.”

“Thanks to each of you,” Sutton concluded. “You did your job and our world is better.”
