Abbeville —
Glenn Dorsey will serve another four-year term as Wilcox County's chief magistrate. That appointment was made at Tuesday's county commission meeting.
Dorsey who has been in the chief magistrate's position for 33 years works full-time, but gets the salary of an associate magistrate (90% of the chief magistrate's salary as set by the state). When he first began serving in this county position, he was holding another job, so he only worked part-time.
All commissioners except Tracy Tyndal favored the reappointment. Dorsey said he is willing to continue working for the same salary.
Also during Tuesday's meeting, county governors approved a grant application for $60,000 from the Department of Natural Resources to create a walking track/nature trail on Recreation Department property adjacent to the creek bed in the edge of the woods.
The plan calls for the addition of benches, picnic tables, trash receptacles and two pavilions along the trail. Wilcox County will be required to provide $15,000 in cash and in-kind contributions to the project. SPLOST (special purpose local option sales tax) funds can be used for the actual cash match which should not be much, according to City Manager Paula Jones.
"This is a good way to get a walking track at a low cost," Jones commented.
Commissioner David Brown said he wants to get the former health department building sold, and he thinks that may not be possible unless the structure has a new roof. He suggested looking into the cost of a roof versus demolition of the building. A final decision will be made after the first of the new year, commissioners decided.
Everyone was reminded of the luncheon meeting Thursday (today) with the county's new state legislators, Senator John Crosby and Representative Buddy Harden at the Ag Center in Rochelle.
