Council makes appointments

VIENNA — City council here started the new year by welcoming back members Beth English and Walter Brown.

Mayor Emerson Lundy administered the oath of office for the two at the beginning of the regular meeting Monday night at City Hall.

Afterwards, all members of the board, and Mayor Lundy took their ethics policy and procedures oath, which was given by City Administrator Gail Bembry. The board approved a motion for Eddie Daniels to continue to serve as the board’s mayor pro tem.

Following a lengthy executive session, council members emerged and voted on the appointments for 2010.

Gail Bembry was re-appointed to serve as the city administrator/clerk/finance director. Debbie Spring will continue as her assistant/deputy clerk.

Likewise, Jamey Reed will continue as the city’s chief of police, and the board voted to re-appoint Robert Jones as assistant police chief.

Nathan Jordan and Bobby Daniels will remain in their positions as public works director and assistant to the public works director, respectively. Michael Causey will continue to serve as fire chief and Verlin Jones will remain the city’s attorney.

Also during Monday’s meeting:

• Council members heard reports from Vienna Better Hometown, Vienna Public Works department, and Community Development. Reed named Lt. Cozie Ray as the Vienna Police Department pfficer of the year. They also reviewed the finance report and the city administrator’s report.

• A resolution to accept an award from the Economic Development Administration totaling $1million for improvements to an aerated wastewater treatment lagoon and land application system facilities was approved.

• A contract to allow DCUTS to ask for operating expenses was okayed.

The next meeting of the Vienna City Council is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 25, 2010 at 6 p.m. at the Vienna City Hall.
