Cordele —
PlantersFirst Bank’s front lobby was filled with a sea of colors from pale pink to brilliant rose Valentine’s Day as the Cordele Garden Club staged its annual camellia show.
When the judging was complete, Linda Avrett had captured first place with a delicate Taylor’s Perfection. Finishing in second and third place was Frances Fisher with a Royal Velvet and Kiki Tojo.
Previous first place winners are not allowed to compete in the regular show, but they have a separate category called “Hall of Fame,” and the first place award in that category went to Joann Williams whose winning specimen was a Terrell Weaver.
She continues to tend the camellia bushes her late husband, Billy Williams cultivated and lovingly cared for until his death.
Following Williams’ death several years ago, the Garden Club created a new category for the show called the Billy Williams’ Best Seedling, and that award this past Thursday went to Mary Lynn Hopper.
Five honorable mentions were named in Thursday’s show. Winners were Lily Shepard with a Pink Perfection; Dr. Bob Bennett (Tomorrow Park Hill); Amelia Carter (Harold Paige); Mary Lynn Hopper (Frank Houser) and Bill Athon (Drama Girl).
Ribbons and cash prizes were presented to each of the winners with the prizes provided by PlantersFirst Bank and the Cordele Garden Club.
In conjunction with the camellia show, the bank sponsored Customer Appreciation Day and welcomed customers throughout the day in their Hawaiian leis. Other tropical decorations were scattered about the lobby.
A drawing was held, and one lucky customer won $100.
Garden Club member Carla Payne served as chairman of camellia show.
