Cordele —
Five cities in the tri-county area will be having elections Nov. 8. Early voting for those elections starts Monday.
Cordele voters will go to the county Government Center (old courthouse) to cast their ballots. Registered voters in Vienna, Unadilla, Byromville and Abbeville will go to their respective city halls to vote.
Since the original qualifying dates in early September, three candidates have dropped out of their races, and one of those withdrawals made an election unnecessary in Arabi. Initially, Incumbent Arabi Mayor Alan Douglas and Craig Huckaby both qualified for that position. Douglas chose to drop out of the race, however, so Huckaby will assume the mayor's office in January. Incumbent Councilmen Lee Clark and Larry Pate will remain in their positions since no one qualified to run against them.
In Cordele, Incumbent Councilman Jimmy Black also chose to withdraw from that race which means that Jamie Fernandez will automatically assume the seat currently held by Black. Councilman A. J.Rivers faces opposition from Sammie L. "Big Daddy" Hill. That will be the only election on the Cordele ballot.
Originally, three people had qualified for the mayor's office in Vienna. Since Willie Davis has dropped out, Incumbent Mayor Emerson Lundy now only faces opposition from Councilman Eddie Daniels.
Running for Daniel's vacated council seat are Jim Hayes and Henry Johnson. Incumbent Councilwoman Brenda Gramm has opposition from Randall Almond.
Unadilla voters will choose a mayor and three councilpersons. Incumbent Charles West faces Bobby West in the mayor's race, and incumbent councilmen Lewis Lockerman, John Offenberg and Greg Speight are joined by Justin Bridges, Lontavius Lester, Lancester Taylor and Chester Thomas. The three top vote getters will be elected and assume office in January.
To fill the mayor's seat in Byromville, vacated by Kenneth Lester, Councilman Perry Fountain and Victor Clark are vying against one another. Only three candidates qualified for four available council seats.
In Abbeville, six candidates are running for three available seats. Two of those are incumbents, Marlin Craft and Michael Estes. They are joined on the ballot by Robert Webb, Ronald W. Culpepper, Michael "Mike" R. Cook and Donnie Conner.
Besides Arabi, the cities of Pitts, Pineview and Pinehurst also were able to cancel their elections because only the exact number of candidates needed to fill the offices qualified.
All Crisp and Wilcox County voters also will be going to the polls to vote on a SPLOST. In Crisp County, a referendum asking voters to continue the special purpose local option sales tax for education is on the ballot. (See related story in today's paper).
Wilcox voters will be asked to continue a SPLOST to fund capital projects selected by county commissioners and city officials in each of the municipalities.
