Tifton —
Randy Coffee Farms is this year’s conservationist of the year for Crisp County.
The Middle South Soil and Water Conservation District Board of Supervisors and its cooperating banks recognized conservationists of the year from all that district’s counties at a banquet at the Agrirama Conference Center here on Nov. 1.
Coffee employs a variety of conservation practices on his 1,200 acre farm including terraces, strip tillage, waterways, and rotation of cotton and peanuts.
He has participated in the EQIP Program, where he utilizes cover crop planting, as well as diesel to electric conservation for energy efficient irrigation.
Coffee and his father, John have received several awards in the past including top cotton producer for Crisp County in 1993 and top peanut producer for Crisp County in 2011.
He is a member of Crisp County Farm Bureau and a past board member, as well as a past board member of FSA (Farm Service Agency) for 4 years.
He and his wife Melody have three children and two grandchildren. The Coffee family has been members of the Hatley Baptist Church in Crisp County for more than 40 years, where Coffee serves as a deacon.
Conservationists of the year awards are given to the outstanding conservationists in the nine surrounding counties that represent the Middle South GA Soil & Water Conservation District.
This award is issued to those who achieve excellence in the field of soil and water conservation. Winners are improving their land, as well as helping to improve their community and state.
