CORDELE — A 21-year-old Crisp County Law Enforcement Center inmate has been charged with riot in a penal institution and battery as the result of an alleged Monday morning assault of another prisoner.
Deputy Willie Lee said he was in the process of dispensing medications to inmates when he heard an inmate yelling for help. Upon responding, he said he saw Rekeldric Geraud Jones, who is being held on a murder charge, holding a fellow prisoner by the hair while beating him about the face with his fist.
Lee immediately summoned fellow officers to assist in separating the two men. The victim, who is in jail on an armed robbery charge, was taken to the Crisp Regional Hospital emergency room for treatment of a severe eye injury.
In other recent sheriff’s department activity, deputies:
— Apprehended a 19-year-old man being sought by the United States Marines for going AWOL.
Deputy Al Thompson and Cpl. Sangster said they first went to a Highway 90 address Tuesday in search of Frank Lee Mills. Told he was not there, the officers were given a Listonia Road address where he possibly could be found.
When deputies arrived at that home, they learned Mills had already fled into a wooded area behind that residence. Mills was tracked to the location he was hiding and was taken into custody without incident.
— Charged Donald Wilson Wilder, 67, of 352 Evergree Church Rd., with battery as the result of an altercation he reportedly had on June 16 with Barney Lee Kinard of a 1350 Hwy. 41 S., Vienna, address.
Deputy Chad Walker said the two men apprently got into a heated argument over a farm fields fire that Kinard had set in an authorized controlled burn.
Wilder apparently confronted Kinard after becoming afraid the blaze was endangering his home. At one point in the dispute, Kinard said Wilder grabbed and ripped his shirt and in the process scratched him on the chest.
Deputies said they repeatedly asked Wilder to calm down before eventually filing the battery charge against him.
— Received five theft complaints and investigated one case of each of burglary and terroristic threats.
