Abbeville man charged in fatal shooting

ABBEVILLE — Authorities in Telfair County are holding a man from here on murder charges.

According to an Associated Press story, 21-year-old Anthony Travis Lomax of Abbeville, has been charged with murder in the death of a Helena man earlier in the week.

GBI Special Agent Greg Harvey said Lomax has been charged with malice murder and aggravated assault in the shooting death of 25-year-old Willie Gean Johnson.

Johnson was shot in the head Wednesday morning and died later in the day at The Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon.

Johnson reportedly drove past the Helena residence of a former girlfriend about 5:50 a.m. Wednesday and spotted Lomax’s vehicle. The GBI agent said he waited for Lomax in the front yard, and the two men got into a fight when Lomax came out.

Harvey said Johnson then parked his car in front of the house as Lomax was trying to pull out of the driveway. Lomax allegedly fired two shots through the front window of Johnson’s vehicle, and one struck him.

Wilcox Sheriff’s officials later arrested Lomax at his residence and turned him over to Telfair law enforcement officers.
