City grapple truck ready for use

UNADILLA — City officials here have purchased a grapple truck, taking delivery of the vehicle this past Tuesday.

The city has contended with garbage disposal problems for a while, and this truck should help alleviate those problems, officials said.

When people place discarded items such as beds, couches and refrigerators by the side of the road or next to their garbage receptacles, it has created an eyesore. The new truck will enable city workers to now dispose of those larger items.

At their meeting Tuesday night, council members appointed Henry Wheeler as the primary driver of the truck.

In other business:

• City Administrator Perry Ivie is looking into the possibility of a city pound. He previously made an arrangement to drop animals at Vienna with an imposed fee of $25 per animal, but recently had to release a dog because Vienna didn’t have space for it.

Ivie and council agree the animal problem is out of control and they want the public to be assured that steps are being taken to resolve it.

• Qualifying fee for those wishing to run for a seat on the Unadilla City Council was set at $116.71 which is 3% of the salary.

• Council approved the second reading of the ordinance for the law enforcement contract with the Sheriff’s Department.

• The Cherry Street project is coming to a close with only a few minor details left with the fence area.

The next meeting of the Unadilla City Council will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 10, at 6:30 p.m.
