Wilcox Arts Council to sponsor symphony

ABBEVILLE - The Ocmulgee Symphony Orchestra will bring a program of American patriotic and religious music to the Wilcox County Arts Council auditorium here Sunday, Nov. 23 at 3 p.m.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students, thanks to the sponsorship of the Wilcox County Arts Council. They may be purchased in advance from council members or at the door prior to the performance.

The orchestra also will perform the same program in Hawkinsville at the Opera House on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets to that performance are $25.

"Everything on the program is American music except for Tchaikovsky's '1812 Overture,'" says conductor, Dr. Charles Quinn of Cochran, "and that's almost an American standard now, as it's a July 4 concert favorite all across the U. S."

The concert will open with the "Chester Overture" by William Schuman which is based on William Billings' "Hymn and Marching Songs of the American Revolution."

Following on the program will be these selections: "The Commando March" by Samuel Barber; "Eternal Father, Strong to Save;" the "Navy Hymn" by Claude Smith; and "Chorale and Shaker Dance" by John Zdechlik, based on the Shaker tune, "A Gift to be Simple." Also on the program will be "Variations on 'America,''' by Charles Ives; "America, the Beautiful" by Samuel A. Ward; "Barnum and Bailey Favorite" by Karl King; "The Sound of Music" by Rodgers and Hammerstein, arranged by Robert Bennett; "The Stars and Stripes Forever" and "The Washington Post" by John Phillip Sousa.

The program in Abbeville is made possible in part by the Grassroots Arts program.
