Vienna man dies after being struck by train
VIENNA — A local man died at Crisp Regional Hospital after being struck by a CSX freight train while crossing over a track on foot here Sunday afternoon.
Pedro Gomez, age 22 of 409 3rd Street Extension, died from wounds sustained in the accident that occurred near the 400 block of South 3rd Street shortly after 4 p.m. Sunday, according to information provided by Vienna Police Chief Jamey Reed.
Gomez was reportedly talking on a cell phone as he approached an outdoor staircase that crosses over the tracks headed west. The operator of the train, Timothy Thompson of Fitzgerald, told Reed he was moving slowly on the tracks when he saw Gomez approaching the tracks and repeatedly sounded his horn.
Reed said the train operator was not at fault and Gomez’s blood alcohol content measured .316 — nearly four times the legal limit for drivers.
“No one was at fault here except for the victim,” Reed said, adding Gomez was thrown approximately 10 feet when the train struck.
Reed said an officer transported Gomez’s 13-year-old brother to Crisp Regional Hospital, where authorities with the Department of Family and Childrens Services provided counseling. Reed said he was not sure if the two brothers were legal residents of the United States, but he thought the rest of the victim’s family resided in Mexico.
