FITZGERALD — Police here are investigating the death of a 21-year-old Rochelle man whose body was found Sunday morning at a Ben Hill County campground.
No official cause of death has been declared in the case of Jonathan Curtis Owens of 1083 Gordon Road in Rochelle. Fitzgerald Police and EMS were dispatched to Paulk Park Camp Ground Sunday at approximately 9:52 a.m.
According to the Fitzgerald Police incident report, Owens’ friend Darren Cox, Jr. of Fitzgerald contacted authorities to report “a possible deceased person” inside a recreational vehicle parked at the camp.
Patrolman Chad Bishop said in his report he “entered the R.V. and observed Owens lying on his right side.”
Bishop’s report goes on to say Owens and Cox were staying the night with two friends who had gotten married Saturday. The groom, Ben Meeks of Fitzgerald, said “Owens acted fine last night and was even playing touch football with them,” according to the report.
A detective with the Fitzgerald Police Department took charge of the scene and the Ben Hill County coroner released Owens’ body to the EMS. Funeral service arrangements for Owens have not yet been announced.
