VIENNA — Two Cordele men were injured in a wreck early Sunday after trying to beat a train on Pine Street.
Vienna Police Chief David Musselwhite said Monday that Calvin Gerald Bentley, 29, and Joseph Glenn, both of Cordele were injured shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday when the Honda Accord they were occupying was hit by a southbound Norfolk-Southern train.
Musselwhite said the crossing gates were down at the Pine Street tracks, however, the vehicle went around the arms and was hit by the train, which he said was traveling about 45-50 miles per hour. Both occupants were ejected through the passenger side window and were found lying beside the tracks when Dooly County EMS personnel arrived.
Both men were taken to Crisp Regional Hospital for treatment. Glenn was admitted where he was listed in stable condition Monday. Bentley was transported to the Medical Center of Central Georgia with serious head injuries, Musselwhite said.
At first, authorities weren’t sure who was driving, but since the wreck, have determined that Bentley was the driver. He is charged with DUI (drugs) and also will be charged for going around the crossing arms. Glenn is facing no charges at this time, Musselwhite added.
