CORDELE — Dr. Theresa Gillespie, Toni Chociemski and Diane Fletcher were recent guests at the Crisp Regional Health Services January Board Meeting. Gillespie and Chociemski are both from Emory University and served as key leaders in the Georgia Cancer Study. Fletcher is the CEO of the Southwest Georgia Cancer Coalition.
The Georgia Cancer Study is a statewide, prospective cohort study to look at risk factors for and possible ways to prevent cancer and other diseases. The goal of the GCS is to enroll 140,000 adults aged 25-74 without a diagnosis of cancer who reside in Georgia. They will then examine the diet, lifestyle, environment, medication exposure, personal and family history of the individuals enrolled.
Crisp Regional Health Services and Crisp County were selected by Emory to serve as the first of two pilot sites before taking the study statewide. The first recruitment event was last spring with several more following into the fall.
Gillespie stated, “Crisp Regional was a wonderful location for our test pilot. Emory is very appreciative to Mr. [Wayne] Martin and the entire board for allowing us to join forces with Crisp Regional in this project.”
Wayne Martin, President and CEO of CRHS, said, “We felt honored to be chosen as Emory’s first test site. They were a wonderful group to work with and we are grateful to our employees and this community for their support with this study.”
Crisp Regional Health Services includes a 65-bed hospital, a 143-bed nursing home, a home health agency, a dialysis facility, a hospice and home care program, a retirement facility and four rural health clinics.
