CORDELE — A Crisp County elementary school is one of two Georgia schools to receive national recognition as an outstanding Title I school.

Crisp County School Superintendent Dr. Judy Bean made the announcement to members of the Crisp County School Board during Tuesday night’s regular October meeting. International Community School in DeKalb County and J.S. Pate Elementary School in Crisp County are Georgia’s first National Title I Distinguished Schools.

“These two schools are among many in Georgia that are getting great results by having high expectations for all students and focusing on the needs of every child,” said State Superintendent of Schools Kathy Cox. “Congratulations to International Community School, J.S. Pate Elementary and all of our Title I Distinguished Schools.”

Bean praised the efforts of the faculty, staff and students at Pate, saying recognition of this stature is “unheard of in south Georgia.”

The two national award recipients were among 805 schools identified as Georgia Title I Distinguished Schools. To be considered distinguished, a school must have made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) under No Child Left Behind for at least three years.

J.S. Pate Elementary School, a K-2 school in Cordele, is being honored for making Adequate Yearly Progress for nine consecutive years and having the highest combined reading and math scores in 2007. With more than 75 percent of its students receiving free and reduced lunch, J.S. Pate has had extremely high test scores.

This past school year, 97 percent of Pate’s students passed state tests in reading and English language arts and 92 percent passed in mathematics.

The school will be honored on Nov. 2 at an event in Atlanta.

The Federal Title I program provides money to schools for the education of economically-disadvantaged children. Title I schools are campuses that receive this funding.

“J.S. Pate Elementary has a no excuses mentality that sets high expectations for all students,” Cox said. “They are getting great results and are producing students who are ready for lifelong learning.”
