UNADILLA — Major Ernest Dennard, assistant chief for the Unadilla Police Department, is now overseeing the department in the wake of former Police Chief Leonard Smith’s dismissal last week.

“All officers were sworn in last Tuesday and now our focus is carrying out our sworn duties in a professional manner. In doing so, we can earn the trust and respect of the community,” Dennard announced during the regular Unadilla City Council meeting held Tuesday night.

Smith was found guilty by a Dooly County Superior Court jury on Friday, Aug. 3 of three felony counts of making false statements and writings. He was sentenced to five years in prison plus an additional 10 years on probation.

He was accused of submitting time cards and receiving payment for police work during the same hours, both with the Unadilla and Fort Valley Police Departments.
