UNADILLA — Major Ernest Dennard, assistant chief for the Unadilla Police Department, is now overseeing the department in the wake of former Police Chief Leonard Smith’s dismissal last week.
“All officers were sworn in last Tuesday and now our focus is carrying out our sworn duties in a professional manner. In doing so, we can earn the trust and respect of the community,” Dennard announced during the regular Unadilla City Council meeting held Tuesday night.
Smith was found guilty by a Dooly County Superior Court jury on Friday, Aug. 3 of three felony counts of making false statements and writings. He was sentenced to five years in prison plus an additional 10 years on probation.
He was accused of submitting time cards and receiving payment for police work during the same hours, both with the Unadilla and Fort Valley Police Departments.
In other news from the meeting:
• A contract between Unadilla and Dooly County officials concerning the portion paving of John D. Law Drive and Barron Street is still being finalized.
• City Clerk Gail Reid announced that interested parties can qualify for mayor and three council seats by August 27 - 31. Qualifying fees are $55 for mayor and $45 for council seats. The last day to register to vote will be October 9.
• Officials approved a beer and wine retail license for Lounge 300.
• Council members agreed to meet at 5:30 p.m. August 28, prior to the next scheduled meeting to discuss the 2007-2008 budget. City Administrator Ronnie Brand reported that there is $3,000 less in revenues over last year’s budget.
