Things were a lot different at Adams Drug Store thirty-five years ago. When Glenda Gill went to work there, Ira Lee Adams, Margaret Adams, and David Payne welcomed her.
She and Vernelle Bailey became not only co-workers, but friends. As the days, months and years ticked away, Gill witnessed many changes.
From an old-fashioned cash register in the gift department to a new up-to-date point of sale system today, Gill has learned how to modernize her way of thinking.
Three decades ago, prescriptions were written by hand. Pills were counted manually. In those days, Adams had busy cosmetic and variety gift counters. Gill admits that the new technology has made her job somewhat easier.
This fall, she celebrates a thirty-five year anniversary with Adams Drug Store. She’s almost always in the front of the store, busily putting stock on the shelves or greeting “her” customers. She refers to the people frequenting the establishment as her customers. And she treats them like her best friends.
“I have always liked my employers, coworkers and customers,” Gill says. “And I like meeting people.”
Over the years, Gill has seen employees come and go. Her faithfulness to the company has been evident as she works and serves the public.
Gill is a mother and grandmother. Her son, Walter continues to live in Cordele. Lisa has moved to Florida. Her grandchildren, Chase, Russell and Remington are the light of her world.
The distance between Gill and Lisa, Russell and Remington doesn’t keep her away from them. She oftentimes travels the distance to watch little league baseball games and just to spend quality time with the boys.
Even in her mid-sixties, Gill continues to love her yard work. She keeps several acres of grass cut around her home, while helping her mother and other family members.
On Sundays, she is involved in her church. She is a Sunday school teacher at Pleasant Hill Freewill Baptist Church in Dooly County. She oftentimes talks about James and the sweet things he says and does. Gill has been a member there since her childhood.
She also is a member of Tremont Community Club. She bakes the best orange blossoms and is ready and willing to share them at work, at club meetings, and at church.
Some of her favorite memories of her job at Adams Drug Store have been watching the Adams and Payne children grow up.
Gill plans to work at least ten more years, with Russell Adams and Jonathan Sinyard, the newest pharmacist in the store. Thirty five years plus ten more seems like a reasonable goal for a lifelong career. But with only five more years beyond that, Gill could celebrate her golden anniversary with the business.
Friends and associates believe she just might do it.
