County considers road abandonment

By BECKY CRISSMAN

VIENNA — Commissioners here continued a discussion at their Thursday meeting concerning the abandonment of Christmas Drive in Vienna.

County Attorney Bill NeSmith advised commissioners on the situation involving the road which is located on the east side of the Dooly Medical Center.

The board had denied the original request for abandonment made by David Sanders, agreeing to maintain the road.

During an earlier meeting they learned of a conflict concerning a cell tower on property just outside the city limits. Apparently the guide wire for the tower is located virtually in the middle of the county right of way making it impossible for the countain to maintain the road.

It is policy that no structures interfere with the right of way, but the guide wire cannot be moved without the entire tower being moved.

NeSmith said that since the road serves no purpose and is undeveloped that the simplest decision would be to abandon the road. The cell phone tower is owned by a separate entity than the one who owns the land on which it sits.

NeSmith advised commissioners that it is the landowner that they will have to deal with. The board agreed to have a surveyor look at the area.

Commissioners reviewed bids that were received in November for Richmond Road Project . Only two bids were received and engineers for the project recommended the lower of the two from Reeves Construction be accepted. That bid of $735,84.05, was some $160,000 less than the competitor.

Also during the meeting:

• Board members voted to approve the purchase of a backhoe/loader for the public works department from Flint Equipment Company. The company was the only one who submitted a bid to the board for approval.

• They were informed that Unadilla will be holding its annual Christmas parade on Saturday, Dec. 12 at 11 a.m.

• They acknowledged a letter from the Flint Humane Society, thanking them for their support throughout the year.

The next meeting of the Dooly County Commissioners is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 17, 2009 at the Dooly County Economic Development Training Center.
