O’Neal homes on tour

CORDELE – Crisp Area Arts Alliance and residents of the historic O’Neal neighborhood invite the community to enjoy a walking tour of a part of that neighborhood Saturday, Dec. 12 beginning at 5 p.m.

Members of the CAAA will host an open house at their headquarters, 701 17th Ave. E. to begin the tour. During the open house, participants will receive tickets that will admit them to each of the houses on the tour. They’ll also get some historical information about each of the four homes.

At 6 p.m., everyone will travel to the O’Neal neighborhood where they will be invited to tour the Slade-Cole home at 502 E. 12th Ave., the Miller-Krause home at 601 E. 13th Ave., the Pound-Gower home at 505 E. 13th Ave. and the McMillan-Grantham home at 509 E. 13th Ave.

Lin Barnes who is coordinating the event said luminaries along the sidewalk will help guide visitors to the homes on the tour.

Barnes also provided some information about each of the homes which will be decorated for the Christmas season.

Don and Leslie Cole are the present owners of the former Slade home which was built by Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Slade in 1918. Surrounded by magnificent magnolia trees, it features Palladian windows and doors.

Barnes and his real estate business associate, Marlene Kimball use the Pound-Gower home for their office. B. B. Pound and his wife built the home around the turn of the 20th century. He also built the commercial building on 11th Ave. which currently houses the pool room.

Nextdoor is the McMillan-Grantham home which was built by Dr. George M. McMillan in 1912 and now belongs to Linda and Charles Grantham who plan to relocate here from Florida.

Bobby Helms lives in the Miller-Krause Queen Anne style cottage which was built in 1910 by the George Millers.
