Tifton trucker citedf or theft by conversion
From STAFF REPORTS
CORDELE — Felony theft by conversion charges have been filed against a Tifton truck driver who after picking up a load of chicken from Tyson Foods in Vienna failed to deliver it to its scheduled destination in Rincon.
Officials with L&A; Trucking in Ty Ty informed Cordele Police Department Sgt. Carrie Lull of the incident late Friday afternoon. She also said a company check was cashed for $75 at Pilot Travel Center where only $5 worth of fuel was purchased.
After Col. Lewis Green located the missing vehicle in the 300 block of 15th St. S. with the seal on the trailer doors broken and the cab locked, police notified the trucking company of the vehicle’s location.
Company president Andy Harrell immediately came here, opened the trailer and showed Lull where six pallets of chicken had been broken down and the contents of them had been taken. Total property loss was estimated at $3,000.
Brown later returned to the scene where he was taken into custody by Sgt. Jeremy Taylor.
In other weekend activity, officers:
— Filed an assortment of charges against Ellis Major Jr., 19, of 404-B Ninth Ave. W., after being dispatched Sunday afternoon to investigate a possible disturbance at 609-F 23rd Ave. W.
Police were called to that location when Major went to the home of his ex-girlfriend to visit a child the two share and then told the mother he was going to leave with the child.
The woman’s current boyfriend told the offender that would not be the case and that he should heed the mother’s request to leave the home. During an ensuing scuffle that broke out between the two men, police were called.
At about the time officers arrived on the scene, Major jumped out a window but was caught and arrested almost immediately. Before being jailed, he was taken to Crisp Regional Hospital to receive stitches for cuts he apparently suffered when he went out the window.
Major is charged with burglary (no forced entrance), aggravated assault, kidnapping (minor), cruelty to children (third degree), criminal trespass, possession of a weapon in the commission of a crime and interference with government.
— Probed four vandalism complaints.
A resident of the 1300 block of Drayton Rd. told Ptl. Forsythe vandals broke a window in the south side of her residence.
An employee of the Georgia State Probation office located at 1304 Seventh St. S. told Sgt. Carrie Lull someone smashed a north window there with such force that it shattered glass all over the office area.
A resident of the 1100 block of Fourth St. S. told Sgt. Lull that she awoke early Sunday morning to find the windshield smashed, the driver’s side tail lens busted and scratches made in several areas on a 2000 Buick LeSabre actually owned by another woman. The complainant said she had received a couple of threatening calls from a “private” number the day before.
— Responded to a quartet of assorted altercations.
A female resident of the 400 block of 14th Ave. W. told Ptl. Forsythe she was struck in the face by a subject she identified. The officer said he is requesting a simple battery warrant be issued for the offender.
Another female victim told Sgt. Charles Hill she was walking in the 1200 block of 13th St. S. about 7 p.m. Saturday when she was approached by another woman who cursed her and then started choking her.
Other women in the area reportedly stopped the attack on the victim who is eight weeks pregnant. She was taken to Crisp Regional Hospital for treatment of deep scratches on her neck. The identity of her assailant who left the attack area in a dark-colored Mitsubishi is unknown.
Multiple charges were filed Saturday night against Tracy Robinson, 34, of 706 Sixth St. N., as the result of an attack he allegedly made on another man at a 16th Avenue convenience food store.
PFC Clinton Latham said he was told the offender was trying to take money from his victim who suffered visible injuries to his neck and hands. Robinson, who appeared to be drinking at the time of the incident, was charged with battery and the obstruction of an officer in the performance of his duties. It was also learned that he previously had been named on a warrant taken out by the Crisp County Sheriff’s Department.
In responding to an early morning assault 16th Avenue and Eighth Street, Sgt. Jeremy Taylor was met by an off-duty Crisp County Sheriff’s Department deputy who was driving in that area just before 1 a.m. when he saw 5-6 guys attacking the victim in the case.
Taylor said he was told the group of men approached the victim, asked him for a cigarette and when told he had none was attacked. In trying to flee from his assailants, the victim lost one of his shoes before being knocked down and losing his glasses in the process. Both items were recovered. The victim was able to provide a name for one of the suspects none of whom have been located.
— Investigated four theft complaints, one of which involved an employee of Horizon Travel Center.
The manager of that business told Ptl. Forsythe an employee she named had been caught on a security camera taking a $100 bill, exchanging it for five $20 bills, placing the money on the counter near her register and covering it with a calculator and several pieces of paper ,
She then later took the paper and money to a location out of the camera’s view. When her cash drawer checked up $100 short at the end of her shift, she was fired.
The officer had requested a theft by taking warrant for the offender, but store officials later elected not to press charges against her when she repaid the $100 shortage.
Another theft reportedly took place in the Crisp County High cafeteria on Friday. The complainant told Cpl. Christina Martinez that a Kodak camera and a black wallet were removed from her purse between 9:45-11:30 a.m.
A resident of the 300 block of 23rd Ave. W. told Sgt. Lull a black male took her husband’s $50 pair of boots from the back porch of the family home and walked away with them Saturday afternoon. Police searched for but could not locate the offender.
A resident of the 100 block of Seventh St. S. told Lt. Lloyd Anderson Saturday night that her live-in boyfriend had taken her ATM card and had made at least two withdrawals that left her account overdrawn $200.
— Looked into a couple of attempted theft reports.
Two Hilltop Apartment residents told Cpl. Jesse Barfield that someone entered their unlocked vehicles last Thursday night.
One of the complainants said an attempt was made to remove the CD player from her vehicle and the other said a 2GB Travel Drive valued at $12 was taken from her automobile.
— Made an assortment of arrests.
Jermaine Troutman, 24, of 2516 10th St. S., was charged with theft by taking and probation violation.
Ronnie Lee Barnes, 37, of Hawkinsville, and David Dwayne Waters, 35, of 715 17th Ave. E., were both cited for contempt of court.
Disorderly conduct citations were issued to Leo Dowdell Adams, 36, of Warner Robins and Felicia Hayes, 28, of 505 11th St. S,
Raymond English, the owner of The Other Place at 2010 Central Avenue, was issued a summons for having his business open after hours when Sgt. Charles Hill said he saw 9-10 subjects standing around the bar area there at 3:30 a.m. Saturday.
Marcus Olds, 31, of 309 Second Ave. E., was issued two summons for violation of the state rabies law after two of his dogs were seen tied to trees during Sunday morning’s rainfall.
— Received a stalking complaint from a Fourth Ave. E. resident who told Cpl. Martinez a man she named is pursuing her 17-year-old granddaughter. An investigation is ongoing.
