Police investigateshots fired into apartments

CORDELE —Shots were fired into two adjoining apartments in the 700 block of 13th St. S. just before 5 a.m. Thursday, according to recent Cordele Police Department records.

Four persons in one of the units told Lt. Louis New they heard shots strike the residence where two other occupants were infants. One of the bullets struck the wall just above where one resident was sleeping.

All parties on the scene told the investigating officer they had no idea who was responsible for firing the shots. Shell casings and the spent round found in the apartment were collected as evidence.

Officers returned to the area about 45 minutes later when it was reported the shooter(s) had returned and were trying to fight. Several subjects were found in the yard at that time but Sgt. Lull’s follow-up report noted “no one could say who was there or what was going on.”

In other activity onWednesday and early Thursday, oficers:

— Said thieves entered four cars that had been left at an auto repair shop and another vehicle that was parked outside a paint and body shop and stole various items from them.

The owner of Bill’s Auto Service located on Maple Ave. told Sgt. Jeremy Taylor that speakers had been stolen from a 1988 Buick Skylark that was entered through the trunk.

At that same location, in-dash radios were removed from a 1981 Pontiac Grand Prix and a 1990 Honda Accord and tail lights and the steering column were taken from a 1993 Chevrolet pickup. All three of those vehicles had been left unlocked.

At Ace Body Shop on 22nd Ave. W., an unlocked 1990 Honda Prelude was entered and an Eclipse brand removable DVD/stereo player was taken.

— Responded to a call from Crisp Co. High personnel when a bus driver reported seven students were disrupting others by talking loud, using profanity, refusing to sit down and playing on cell phones.

When it was learned six of the seven disruptive passengers weren’t supposed to be riding the bus, Sgt. Taylor said they were removed and instructed to find another way home.

— Filed multiple charges against a 32-year-old man who PFC Clinton Latham said twice refused to leave the area of a 16th Avenue W. convenience food store because loitering is prohibited.

The officer said after instructing Taon Nikil Williams, of 607 Ninth St. S., a second time to leave the area the offender aggressively approached the patrol car, told the officer he couldn’t catch him because he “could run it in three flat."

At that point, Latham said he drew his taser and placed Williams under arrest on charges of loitering, disorderly conduct and obstruction of an officer in the performance of his duties,

—Arrested Charles Anthony Reddick, 45, of 505 15th St. S., on an outstanding warrant.

— Said they have requested warrants be issued on Christopher Westbrook for two counts of simple battery and one count each of theft by sudden snatching and criminal trespass.

Sgt. Carrie Lull reported Westbrook is being sought after he allegedly struck a former girlfriend at a 23rd Ave. W apartment, grabbed her cell phone when she tried to call 911 and momentarily left the area.

When he did so, the victim said she went to a neighbor’s apartment and called police. After making the call, the victim again encountered the alleged offender who asked if she had contacted authorities. Upon receiving an affirmative answer, he reportedly threw the cell phone at her but instead struck a neighbor’s 1-year-old child on the head.

— Made an arrest in a property damage complaint.

Lt. New said he charged Robert Lee Brown, 34, of 1007 Joe Wright Dr. S., with second degree criminal damage to property involving his estranged wife’s vehicle.

A witness told the officer she saw Brown throw a bicycle at the car, use a piece of concrete to scratch the vehicle in a couple of areas and then throw the concrete through the windshield while it was parked outside a home in the 700 block of 23rd Ave. W. He then left the scene.

Police later took Brown’s into custody.

—Filed charges against the driver and a passenger in a car stopped for a cracked taillight.

Lt. New had to threaten the driver, Kourtney Jarvone Coley, 25, of 2106 Seventh St. S., with his taser in order to keep him from walking away from the vehicle after steered it into a yard on 23rd Ave. W.

Coley, who continued to be combative during the arrest procedure was cited for a fourth offense of driving without a license and possession of less than an ounce of marijuana that was found on the ground near where he was taken into custody.

The passenger, Coleshia Quinnette Jones, 26, of 706 23rd Ave. W., was charged with disorderly conduct when she ignored the officer’s instructions to stay away from the vehicle.
