Vienna —
Council members here handled a basic agenda approving several items of business during their regular meeting Monday night including multiple items falling under community development.
Community Development director Janet Joiner submitted a written report to council members for their review prior to the meeting.
The first item approved was a lease agreement for the Red Kap building on East Pine Street which is housed by McMillan Plastics. According to Joiner the business only occupied a portion of the building at $400 a month but is expanding and would like to lease the entire building. The lease would be for 12 months at $500 each month with a 60 day notice to terminate for either party. The tennant would also be responsible for any repair/improvements made to the building.
Council members also approved three items necessary for Joiner to apply for the 2013 CHIP grant on behalf of the city. She advised council that the city had been fortunate to receive grants for the last two years and that she would like to see if they could make it three years in a row.
The first item approved was the resolution officially authorizing the filing of the CHIP application. The second was to adopt the section 3 plan which states that the funds will be for low income housing. The third was to adopt the policies and procedures manual for carrying out terms of agreement if the grant is received. Council voted unanimously on each item and Joiner will proceed with the application for the grant.
Joiner commented on the work that had been done at the Cotton Museum. She said that though the project was bigger than anticipated that it was progressing and that they anticipate a ribbon cutting on December 6.
“We have had several visitors come by as we have been working,” she said. “We recently had some travelers from Michigan stop. We are excited to get the museum up and running again.”
Also on the agenda;
• Mayor and council heard reports from Larista Thompson from Vienna Better Hometown and the Police Department.
• Council authorized City Attorney Verlin Jones to represent the election supervisor in a pending legal matter.
• Joiner reminded council members of the hometown connection meeting on Thursday. They will meet at City Hall at 3 p.m. They will return to city hall at 5 p.m. for a meet and greet sponsored by the Dooly County Chamber of Commerce and the Vienna Woman’s Club.
• During mayor and council comments, councilman Walter Brown mentioned the two main items on his wish list for the city; A community swimming pool and a time/temperature sign in the city.
