Wilcox arrests

ROCHELLE — For the second time in less than a week, a suspected drug dealer has been taken off the streets of Wilcox County.

This time authorities say they hit the jackpot, as the man charged is one of the “biggest problems our county has seen in the past year as far as dealing drugs.”

Agents with the South Central Drug Task Force and deputies from the Wilcox County Sheriff’s Office arrested William Davenport, 28, of Rochelle Saturday.

At around 2 p.m. Saturday, Sheriff Stacy Bloodsworth said agents and deputies served a search warrant on a residence north of Rochelle after performing surveillance on Davenport’s whereabouts.

“It was basically a buy-bust case,” said Task Force Agent Alan Mann. “He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

The arrest came after an extensive investigation on the suspect and netted more than 29 grams of cocaine, an undetermined amount of currency, and a late model 1990’s Nissan pickup truck.

“We’ve received numerous complaints on this guy...he’s been one of our biggest problems as far as the drug activity in Wilcox County,” said Bloodsworth.

Davenport was taken the Wilcox County Jail and charged with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute.

Maj. Lonnie Curry of the sheriff’s office said Davenport was already on probation for a previous charge of sale of cocaine.
