ABBEVILLE — A Wilcox County man was killed and his uncle injured in a late afternoon wreck Monday in Wilcox County.
Brandon Caine Randall, 32, of Abbeville was killed in the one-vehicle wreck on Addison Road about three miles south of Abbeville. Randall was the passenger in the 1993 Nissan which was driven by his uncle, 43-year-old Eddie R. Whitfield, also of Abbeville.
According to Senior Trooper David Grantham of Georgia State Patrol Post 30 in Cordele, Whitfield was traveling north on Addison Road when he apparently failed to negotiate a curve and ran off the road. He then overcorrected to the left causing the vehicle to run off the road again before turning sideways and rolling over. The truck then struck a pine tree with its roof.
Grantham said both men were trapped inside for at least 45 minutes as rescue teams with the Wilcox County EMS and Wilcox County Sheriff’s Office freed them from the wreckage.
Whitfield was taken to Taylor Regional Hospital in Hawkinsville for treatment of head injuries and later transferred to the Medical Center in Central Georgia where he was listed in fair condition Tuesday afternoon. Randall was pronounced dead at the scene.
Grantham said charges against Whitfield are pending the outcome of blood alcohol tests.
Funeral services for Randall are scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday in the Abbeville First Baptist Church with burial to follow in the Stubbs Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today at Frazier and Son Funeral Home in Rochelle.
