CORDELE — A local woman who was kidnapped over the weekend may owe her life to her vehicle’s satellite tracking system.
According to reports from the Cordele Police Department, shortly after 9:20 p.m. Friday, Dec. 30, officers were called to a residence at 1002 Seven Springs Drive in reference to a kidnapping.
Upon arrival, stated the reports, the officer learned that 33-year-old Michael Royal of Vienna had entered the home of Laverne Daniels and forced her to get into her vehicle with him.
Sgt. Green was advised that the victim had purchased a vehicle recently from an Albany dealership and was able to make contact with an employee at the lot. The employee advised the officer that the particular vehicle Daniels had purchased was equipped with a satellite tracking system.
Readings from the system showed the vehicle in Dooly County, so local officers contacted the Dooly County Sheriff’s Office and alerted it to the situation and the vehicle’s exact whereabouts.
Dooly County deputies were able to respond to the location where they found the vehicle and the occupants.
Daniels received no physical injuries during the alleged kidnapping but was taken to the Dooly County Sheriff’s Office to be interviewed.
Royal was in a stand-off with deputies for a short while, but deputies were later able to take him into custody.
He is currently being held in the Dooly County Justice Center on outstanding warrants from its agency.
Cordele Police have secured warrants for Royal on charges of burglary, aggravated assault, kidnapping and theft of a motor vehicle.
