Accidents leaves one dead, one critically injured

AMERICUS — Early Tuesday afternoon, an accident involving a compact sized car and a tractor trailor left one dead, one critically injured and a third one

received superficial injuries. Jonathan Drake, 21, of Americus, was the driver and pronounced dead directly after the accident, and a passenger in the car, Jimmy Toms, 21, also of Americus, received superficial injuries and was treated at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center. A third passenger, Scott Potter, 29, of Cordele, received critical injuries and was lifeflighted by the local Lifeline Emergency Helicopter to Macon, and as of press time was in surgery for his injuries.

Sumter County Chief Deputy, Eric Bryant, reported that the accident appeared to have happened when the car, driven by Drake,left the right shoulder of the road to make a U turn and turned in front of the tractor trailor which was behind them. Officers from the Georgia State Patrol Post 10 were called on the scene as was the Sumter County Coroner's Office.
