CORDELE – Three local residents were arrested over the weekend as a result of a disturbance on Peachtree Ave. Friday night.
Olivia Shanteria West, 24, of a N. 11th St. address has been charged with making terroristic threats and disorderly or indecent conduct.
Maurice Antoine Simmons, 30 of a W. Oak Ave. address was cited for disorderly or indecent conduct and obstruction or hindering a law enforcement officer, and Veronique Sanders of the same Oak Ave. address faces disorderly or indecent conduct charges.
Police Officer Erica Cromer said when she responded to the disturbance call, one female complained that the driver of a vehicle was trying to run her off the roadway. Several other females in the area were involved in a verbal altercation, she said.
One of the women, she said, was especially irate and cursing loudly. When Cromer advised her to calm down, the suspect who was identified as West instead began to curse the police officer. Cromer said she immediately arrested her and secured her in the back seat of the patrol car.
By that time, the officer said, Sanders had also begun cursing loudly, and Corporal Bruce Gourley who was providing assistance placed her under arrest.
While Sanders was being handcuffed, Simmons allegedly approached the scene and tried to step between the officer and Sanders. He was instructed to get out of the way, but refused, also becoming belligerent.
He continued to refuse to obey the officers’ instructions, according to Cromer’s report, until Sgt. Charles Pheil told him he was about to get tased.
In another disorderly conduct incident Saturday night at Wal-Mart, Cedric Thomas, 38, of Unadilla was placed under arrest.
Sgt. Charles Dennard said Thomas was observed begging money from people in the parking lot. Earlier in the week, he had been doing the same thing at Raceway. Dennard said the suspect has a history of loitering and harassing people for money and has been warned numerous times that he will be arrested if his behavior continues.
Dennard also investigated an incident Sunday involving the theft of a puppy and a bicycle by juveniles on E. 21st Ave.
Two 16 years olds, a 15 year old and a 14 year old who live on W. 23rd, W. 22nd and W. 19th Ave. all were charged with criminal trespass.
Dennard said an E. 21st Ave. resident, Tori Williams, reported the theft of a Pit Bull dog puppy Sunday evening about 7:30 p.m. She said three puppies were alone inside a fence to eat while she carried the mother dog inside her house. When she came back outside, she saw the juveniles trying to get all three puppies over the fence.
They reportedly dropped two of them, however, and fled on foot when the owner summoned her boyfriend. Williams and her boyfriend, Greg Clark gave descriptions of the boys and what they were wearing.
Dennard found a bicycle that reportedly had been stolen, but did not immediately find the suspects.
Several hours later, Williams called again and reported that the suspects were in the Sunset Homes Apartments area. When Dennard went to that area, he saw four juveniles, and Williams identified them.
At first the suspects denied knowing anything about the puppies, but after police talked to their parents, two of them decided to waive their rights and make a statement. One of them took the dog, he said, so that he could sell it.
