Cordele —
Cordele Fine Arts Club met Jan. 17 at the home of Gail Wade with Josephine Hines as co-hostess. Ten members were served a dessert course of Wesley cake and cheese straws.
Eula Jo Sheffield presided, and Donna Mallory introduced the hymn of the month, “Sweet Betsy from Pike,” a favorite song of pioneers following the gold rush of 1849.
Sheryl McCoy presented the program, the life and music of Henry Mancini.
Soon after 1958, Mancini left Universal-International to work as an independent composer/arrranger and wrote scores for “Peter Gunn” and “Mr. Lucky.” Then in 1961, he scored the music for “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.” Collaborating with Johnny Mercer, he wrote “Moon River,” specifically for the voice range of Audrey Hepburn.
Mancini was nominated for three Academy awards in 1961and won two, record of the year for “Moon River,” and best soundtrack album for “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.”
Also in 1961, Mancini was encouraged to do a concert tour, but this proved to be quite stressful for him due to the varied abilities of the orchestras on the tour. He felt as though the tour was a disaster, but it sparked many requests for him to conduct major orchestras.
In 1962, Paramount Pictures hired Mancini to write the score for Howard Hawk’s “Hatari!” He used unique instruments of Africa in his composition - the thumb piano, pea pods, shell gourds and Maasai chants.
Then in 1963, he went to London to write because it was more economical to produce there than in the U. S.
Club members performed a variety of Mancini’s music. Mrs. Mallory played “The Sweetheart Tree,” Debby Rainer sang “I’ll Give You Three Guesses” from Darling Lily.
Harolene Shingler introduced the song, “Life in a Looking Glass” from That’s Life and Carolyn Hunt played the well-known “Baby Elephant Walk” from Hatari! Mrs. Mallory accompanied all the soloists.
Chorus members sang “It’s Easy to Say.”
