Cordele —
In 2007, Crisp County Commissioners and both Cordele and Arabi city governments adopted a 10-year joint solid waste management plan.
All three entities were charged with parts of the plan’s implementation. One of the county’s jobs is to review three collection options and get one or a combination of those options in place by 2017.
Collection options include:
(1) Maintain county collection using roll-on/roll-off containers (with possible further reduction in the number of sites).
(2) Alter collection to a minimum number of fenced, staffed/unstaffed drop-off centers.
(3) Implement curbside collection countywide.
In two public forums with the community, most attendees think something different from the status quo should be tried.
Some favor fenced and manned sites which would have to meet federal and state environmental specifications; others prefercounty-side curbside pickup.
Now, it will be up to the commissioners to explore those options and decide which is most cost-effective of if they can use a combination of the two.
To read the entire plan which is about 55 pages, go to the following website: http://www.dca.state.ga.us/development/EnvironmentalManagement/programs/downloads/Adopted%20Solid%20Waste%20Management%20Plans/Crisp%20County%202007-2017%20SWMP_Copy.pdf.
The plan also calls for waste reduction/recycling measures. What was then the Middle Flint Regional Development Center (now River Valley Regional Center) assisted with development of the plan, and many hours of research went into the proposal that was adopted.
