Woman charged with hit & run

Cordele —

CORDELE – A Virginia St. woman faces multiple charges after she was allegedly involved in a hit and run incident on W. 16th Ave. this past Friday night.

Lt. Louis New with the Cordele Police Department has charged Angela White, 40, of hit and run/leaving the scene of an accident third offense; driving under the influence of alcohol; having an open container while operating a vehicle and driving with a suspended or revoked license, 2nd offense in five years.

New said the victim in the accident told him White was driving the vehicle that struck her car near the American Legion building and left the area. When the officer initially made contact with White, she denied that she was driving and tried to blame someone else.

That person insisted, however, that White was the driver. Her eyes were watery, New observed. He also said she was unsteady on her feet and had a strong odor of alcohol on her breath.  She admitted having one alcoholic beverage.

Following a field sobriety test, she was placed under arrest.

In other police activity over the long weekend:

• Casey Oneal Durham, 45, of Tifton was charged with improper lane change and possession of marijuana, less than an ounce, second offense. A female passenger in his car, Mildred Ann Lawrence, 52, also of Tifton, was charged with possession of marijuana.

• Jose Manuel Garcia, 33, of Abbeville was cited for driving under the influence of alcohol and driving with a suspended or revoked license, 1st offense in five years.

• Tommy Dwight Manlove, 48, of Geneva, FL was charged with speeding in a construction zone and driving with a suspended or revoked license, 1st offense in five years.

• Several cases of reported burglary and theft were investigated.

A Cloverdale Circle resident told Police Sgt. Charles Pheil that someone broke into his home Saturday while he was away. Reported missing were two laptop computers valued at $2600, an Alltel air card, a charger cord and approximately $3 in change. The victim said he suspects that several youths who have visited his children before may be involved. He did not, however, know their real names.

A burglary at another Cloverdale Circle residence was reported Monday. The resident was out of town, but the property owner said someone had kicked in the back door, and the home appeared to have been ransacked. SSgt. Charles Hill talked by phone to the victim and determined that a flat screen HD television set and a desktop computer were missing. The total value is about $1600.

A 26th Ave. E. resident reported that an Ace Hardware pump sprayer and a gallon of Round-Up were taken from his carport Sunday night.

An unknown person reportedly jumped over a fence, damaged a wood wall and cut a small hole in the fence at Cordele Sash & Lumber Monday morning. Whether anything had actually been stolen was uncertain.

Late Monday afternoon, a woman reported that someone entered her vehicle while it was parked at Wal-Mart and took a CD player.

Sgt. Charles Dennard talked with a victim last Friday who claimed that a number of his checks had been stolen and used to purchase at least $400 worth of goods at Wal-Mart. Someone at the victim’s bank confirmed the transactions and stated that his account would be credited.

An 11th St. S. resident reported the theft of a boat motor and a set of 10 miscellaneous tools from his yard sometime Friday night.

Finally, a man who was staying at a local motel reported the theft of a credit card. He gave the names of two female suspects, but said all he knew about them was one of their phone numbers. Efforts to reach someone at that number were unsuccessful.

• Police investigated several cases of battery.

Lt. Frank Wise said he is requesting warrants for the arrest of Marcus Clark after he allegedly dragged a female subject out of a vehicle by her hair and hit another woman in the face.

SSgt. Dennard said a man who lives on 18th Ave. W. claimed to have been assaulted by another individual. The victim said he went to see a woman on S. Joe Wright Dr., and when he arrived, a subject whom he named came out of the bushes and struck him. He was knocked unconscious, he said, and when he woke up, everyone was gone.

Saturday night, Corp. Bruce Gourley was called to Crisp Regional Hospital where a female was being treated for injuries. She said a group of unknown females jumped her, but she was able to give few other details.

Another subject who required emergency room treatment said he was struck in the face by the brother of a female friend with whom he was visiting in Morningside Homes.

• After wrecking his motorcycle Saturday on 7th St., a man may face DUI charges. A passing motorist reported that the wreck victim was lying on the ground and bleeding. When Corp. Gourley arrived, he said the victim was very reluctant to be treated for his injuries and just wanted to go home.

At the hospital, blood was drawn to determine if he was under the influence, but results are pending. He said he was traveling north when another vehicle attempted to pass him on the right. In trying to avoid a collision, he said, he lost control of his cycle.

• Jonathan Johnson, 22, of a 16th Ave. E. address was charged with a leash law violation.

• A 14 year old Oakland Ave. juvenile faces theft by taking charges.

• A 15 year old who lives on 18th Ave. E. has been cited as an unruly juvenile.

• Derek Lofton, 21, of Arabi is charged with theft of services.

• Seventeen and 14 year old juveniles from different 10th St. addresses face disorderly conduct charges stemming from a Monday incident.
