Nutrition courses will stretch food dollar

Cordele —  Do you find yourself wishing you could cut your budget somewhere just so you can pay that extra bill that has just arrived in the mail?

Would you like to offer your family well balanced and nutritious meals, while cutting your food budget by at least $10 per week?

Crisp County Extension offers free classes through the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education program, also known as EFNEP. These classes are taught by Morgan Hall, EFNEP program assistant.

A curriculum, called Food Talk, includes a series of six lessons which are taught once a week for six weeks.  Each adult class is based on healthy lifestyle topics, including taste testing, menu planning, disease prevention, easy healthy recipes, money saving tips, and food safety.

At each session, participants receive free items such as calendars, measuring spoons, grocery lists, magnets, measuring cups, calcium bookmarks, refrigerator/freezer thermometers, food safety brochures, and recipes for each session.

Adults must attend all six classes to graduate and receive a UGA certificate. Graduates also receive the EFNEP cookbook which has 32 recipes that can be prepared in 15 minutes or less.

EFNEP is federally funded and conducted through the Cooperative Extension Service in every state and U.S. territory. For 40 years, EFNEP has been helping families with children learn how to eat healthier meals and snacks, stretch their food dollars and reduce the risk of food-borne illness.

In Georgia, there are 24 counties that offer EFNEP classes.

Classes will begin locally at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 6, and continue for six Wednesdays on Octo. 13, 20, 27, and Nov. 10 and 17.

Anyone who is interested should contact Hall by Monday, Oct. 4, at (229)276-2612 or come by the Crisp County Extension office at 110 W. 13th Ave, Suite C behind the old courthouse in Cordele to sign up.
