Cordele —
Clemmie Gaston appeared before members of the Cordele City Commission Tuesday night supposedly to talk about picketing. Instead, he verbally attacked a police officer.
Gaston claimed he was mistreated by an officer whom he named after the officer pulled him over for running a red light. That charge was dropped, however Gaston was arrested on an outstanding warrant out of Houston County for theft by conversion.
“I am begging ya’ll to investigate this officer,” Gaston told the Commission. “He should have been investigated before coming here. I didn’t want to come back out and march, but he is forcing me to.”
After Gaston’s departure, Commissioner Jimmy Black told the board “I don’t think we should allow individual employees to be attacked like that. I thought Mr. Gaston was going to talk about picketing.”
In other business at Tuesday’s meeting:
— A motion was approved to table the indecent exposure (or baggy pants) ordinance for another month. “It needs to be more clearly defined,” stated Commissioner Curtis Lucas Jr.
“We don’t want to fine anyone,” said Chairman Zack Wade. “We just want them to pull their pants up.”
— Lucas also discussed the truancy ordinance. “Students who are suspended/expelled should be confined to their homes between the hours of 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. instead of roaming the streets unsupervised,” he said.
“This is actually a school board issue,” stated Edward Beach, finance director.
— A change order for pipe work in the Norbord area was approved by the board. The contract amount to Sam Hall & Sons will be decreased by $72,544.27, making the contract amount now $182,158.98.
— Permission was granted for a graduate student enrolled in a master’s program to conduct a case study on the city of Cordele.
— The Cordele Tree Board requested approval to reduce membership on the board from seven to five in hopes of getting a quorum at the meetings. The City Commission approved this request.
— The board approved a motion to apply for the Safe Routes for Schools (SRFS) grant.
— Major Augustus Telfair’s title was changed from major to fire chief and Public Safety Director Dwayne Orrick’s title was changed to public safety director/police chief.
— Action on a cemetery ordinance was tabled per Commissioner Black’s request.
— Bids to replace the fire station #1’s HVAC system were received, but Black’s suggestion to table action on those also was approved. “We need to check on those bids,” he stated.
— The board approved the 2010 Tax Digest. The millage rate will remain at 10.995 mills as has been the case for the past three years.
— Approval was granted to sell surplus property on a special website.
— Application for a Gateway Grant was approved for roadside enhancement and beautification.
— The first reading of an ordinance was approved to demolish two manufactured homes at 506 W. 8th Ave. and a residential structure at 511 W. 13th Ave. All three have been deemed unsafe and unsanitary because of dense overgrown vegetation.
