VIENNA — Council members here breezed through an unusually short agenda Monday night. One of the first items approved was a proclamation declaring May 2010 as Historic Preservation Month in the City of Vienna.
Recently the city has received a Preserve America Designation which was given by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Historic Preservation Division. The designation recognizes Vienna’s commitment to preserving the historic aspects of the community, such as the Dooly County Courthouse.
Stephanie Langley with Vienna Better Hometown discussed recycling and presented board members with a price list on various chippers. She also introduced Katherine Braxton, recycling chairman.
“We want to educate the community about recycling,” said Langley.
Langley further reported that she is attempting to locate the winner of the “If I were Mayor” essay contest that was sponsored by the city.
Participation in the contest was wonderful, she said, with over 30 essays submitted. Langley said that the winning essay was written by Youlchiria Ridley, but that the child no longer attends school in Dooly County. She said she will keep trying to contact Ridley so that her award can be presented.
Also during the meeting Council members:
• Tabled a vote on an ordinance that had been presented by Dooly County Emergency Management Agency Director Kenny Calhoun.
The ordinance deals with issues that arise if there is a disaster in the community. Among those is enacting curfews. Council asked that some of the wording in the ordinance be changed before they approve it.
• Accepted the only bid submitted for the Hwy. 215 beautification project. The bid was presented by McGraw Landscaping of Vienna.
• Heard from Mayor Pro Tem Eddie Daniels who said he continues to receive complaints from citizens about youth who are wearing “sagging pants.” The city has passed an ordinance prohibiting such behavior.
• Received an update on the Dooly County Unified Transportation System from Director Susan Arnett.
The next meeting of the Vienna City Council is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Monday, May10, 2010 at the Vienna City Hall.
